3.1 Networking Principles

This section introduces the network planning.

Prerequisite

The networking principles that are introduced in this section are under the following
prerequisites:

l

ASs have the multi-pathing function only when ASs are installed with the Huawei multi-
path software, the UltraPath or the multi-path software provided by the OS.

l

ASs communicate with the VIS6000 through switches.

l

ASs communicate with the VIS6000 through switches.

NOTE

l

It is recommended to install and enable the multi-path software on ASs.

l

The VIS6000 can connect to ASs or storage arrays directly.

l

If the VIS6000 can connect to ASs or storage arrays directly, you can skip the following networking
principles with regard to switches.

FC Networking Principles

The FC networking principles are described as follows:

l

One zone can only have two FC interfaces or World Wide Names (WWNs). This facilitates
the isolation of packets, such as the registered state change notification (RSCN) packets.

l

To avoid the interference caused by a damaged FC HBA or the impact on the original
networking caused by system expansion, you are recommended to use the small zone mode.
In other words, the two interfaces of one path through the FC switch form one zone.

l

Only one path is set from one FC HBA interface of an AS to one controller of the VIS6000.

l

To avoid a single point failure of the FC switch, one controller of the VIS6000 must be
connected to two FC switches.

l

The ASs, storage arrays, VIS6000s in the production center and the disaster recovery center
can form the network through FC switches by using the same FC service port. In this case,
these items are configured in the same zone.

NOTE

For details on how to configure a zone for FC switches, see the user manuals of FC switches.

CAUTION

l

In this document, each Fabric network in the FC networking can be regarded as one FC
switch. Huawei switch board NX20 provides the Fabric interface that supports different types
of topologies.

l

To ensure the full redundancy of paths, you are recommended to use the dual-Fabric
networking.

l

If an FC HBA has multiple HBA interfaces, each interface has its only WWN.
