Removing and replacing the system board
Procedure
Removing the system board
1. Power down the server ( Powering down the server on page 41).
2. Remove all power:
a. Disconnect each power cord from the power source.
b. Disconnect each power cord from the server.
3. Remove the server from the rack ( Remove the server from the rack on page 42).
4. Remove all power supplies ( Removing and replacing the AC power supply on page 51).
5. Remove the access panel ( Remove the access panel on page 44).
6. Do one of the following:
• Remove the air baffle ( Removing the air baffle on page 52).
• Remove the 4 LFF midplane cage ( Removing and replacing a 4 LFF midplane cage on page 74).
7. Remove the primary or secondary PCIe riser cage ( Removing and replacing the primary or
secondary PCIe riser cages on page 54).
8. If installed, remove the tertiary PCIe riser cage ( Removing and replacing the tertiary PCIe riser cage
on page 55).
9. Remove the FlexibleLOM ( Removing and replacing the FlexibleLOM on page 62).
10. Remove all DIMMs ( Removing and replacing a DIMM on page 86).
11. Do the following:
a. Observe the guidelines and procedures for NVDIMM relocation ( NVDIMM relocation guidelines on
page 90).
a. Remove all NVDIMMs ( Removing and replacing an NVDIMM on page 87)
12. Remove the fan cage ( Removing and replacing the fan cage on page 61).
13. Disconnect all cables connected to the system board.
14. Observe the following cautions.
CAUTION: Be sure to loosen each heatsink nut in the order indicated. Otherwise, damage might
occur to the heatsink or processor.
CAUTION: Install the processor heatsink assembly as soon as possible after removing it. Do not
leave the processor socket unpopulated for extended periods of time.
