Using Probes with an HP 83491A
To compensate for a passive probe
1
Connect the probe to the
Input
connector on the HP 83491A clock recovery
module.

Attach the probe tip to the
CAL
hook that is located near the floppy disk drive.

Press the
reference receiver module’s
front-panel channel
SETUP
key.

Press
Calibrate
and then
Calibrate probe

To compensate an HP 54701A active probe
1
Connect the HP 83491A output to the electrical measurement channel input.

Connect the probe to the
Input
connector on the HP 83491A clock recovery
module.

Connect the probe power cable to the
Probe Power
connector on the reference
receiver module.

Attach the probe tip to the
CAL
hook that is located near the floppy disk drive.

To compensate for other devices
The information in this section applies to both optical and electrical measure-
ments. Since the mainframe’s CAL signal is a voltage source, it cannot be used
to calibrate to the probe tip when the units are set to Ampere, Watt, or
Unknown. Instead, set the external gain and external offset to compensate for
the actual characteristics of the device. If you do not know the actual charac-
teristics, you can refer to the typical specifications that came with the device.
