System board
The large circuit board
that contains the principle components
of the computer, and to which
accessories are connected.
Test characters
Characters that the
modem automatically generates during
a loopback test. If the test characters
received are the same as those sent, the
modem has passed the loopback test.
Total harmonic distortion
A
specification for quantifying the fidelity
of audio processing equipment.
Touch tone dialing
A dialing method
(as opposed to pulse dialing), in which
telephone numbers are sent as tones
over the telephone line. Telephones
capable of touch-tone dialing have 10
number buttons, a * button, and a #
button.
Tracks
The virtual tracks used by
MIDI sequencers.
Video controller
An expansion board
or chip whose function is to convert
signals in the computer into displayable
signals.
Video memory
Memory that enables
or speeds up drawing to the screen or
increases resolution or color options.
V.FAST
Rockwell proprietary
standard for modems operating at
28,800 bps.
Voices
The number of synthesized
sounds that a device can generate
simultaneously.
V.22
The international data
communications standard for modems
that can operate at speeds up to
1200 bps.
V.22bis
The international data
communications standard for modems
that can operate at speeds up to
2400 bps.
V.32
The international data
communications standard for modems
that can operate at speeds up to
9600 bps.
V.32bis
The international data
communications standard for modems
that can operate at speeds up to
14,400 bps.
V.34
The international data
communications standard for modems
that can operate at speeds up to
28,800 bps.
V.34bis
The international data
communications standard for modems
that can operate at speeds up to
33,600 bps.
V.42
The international error-
correction protocol that detects
erroneous data and requests that it be
retransmitted. V.42 uses LAPM as the
primary protocol and MNP classes 1
through 4 as the secondary protocol.
V.42bis
The international data-
compression protocol that can increase
data transmission speed.
WAV files
A Microsoft file format for
storing digital audio data.
Wavesample
A sample used in a
wavetable or sampling synthesizer to
reproduce a musical instrument sound.
Wavetable
Sound generation using a
table of actual sampled sounds.
