8. BACKLASH ADJUSTMENT
• FORWARD BEVEL GEAR BACKLASH
Backlash adjustment must be made after adjustment of each
gear shim (P. 11-39).
Install the following parts except the water pump.
- Vertical shaft/bevel gear (P. 11-35)
- Shift rod B assembly (P. 11-24)
- Propeller shaft holder assembly (P. 11-7)
1) Holding the propeller shaft securely with the special tool as
shown, tighten the puller bolt to the specified torque.
TORQUE: 5 N.m (0.5 kgf.m, 3.7 lbf.ft)
Turn the vertical shaft five to ten turns clockwise to fit the
bearing.

2) Attach the special tool to the vertical shaft as shown, and
bring the tip of the dial indicator in contact with the special
tool (backlash indicator tool) perpendicularly.
TOOL:

3) Turn the vertical shaft lightly right and left while pushing it
with 10 kg of force and record the dial indicator reading.
Measure the backlash at four points (by turning the vertical
shaft in increments of 90
o
) 90
o
in the same manner.
• Do not turn the propeller shaft when turning the vertical
shaft.

DIAL INDICATOR
Install the dial indicator so its end
is in contact with the backlash
inspection arm perpendicularly.
4) If the backlash is too large, increase the forward bevel gear
shim thickness and recheck the backlash.
If the backlash is too small, reduce the forward bevel gear
shim thickness and recheck the backlash.
• Use the special tool when the 32 x 58 x 17 mm bearing
[outer race] is removed to adjust the backlash again (P.
11-31).
