b. INSPECTION
• PROPELLER SHAFT THRUST CLEARANCE
1) Remove the gear case assembly (P. 11-3).
2) Set the gear case assembly so that the propeller shaft is in
vertical position and secure the gear case.
3) Push the shift rod B of the gear case assembly down to the
lowermost position ["R" (Reverse) position].
4) Turn the propeller shaft 2 or 3 turns counterclockwise to
make snug contact of the bearing and gear.
5) Set the dial indicator on the propeller shaft and bring the tip
of the gauge in contact with the rib of the propeller shaft
holder perpendicularly.
6) Push the propeller shaft down in the direction shown and
measure the propeller shaft thrust clearance.
7) If the propeller shaft thrust clearance is less tan the
specification, check that the bearing is set in the forward
bevel gear or the reverse bevel gear securely (P. 11-14, 15
and 35).
If the propeller shaft thrust clearance exceeds the
specification, check the propeller shaft, 22 mm washer,
forward bevel gear and the reverse bevel gear for wear and
replace the faulty part(s) if necessary (P. 11-12 and 33).
