ENGINE - STARTING
Starting the Engine
Pre-Operational Checklist
1. Check engine oil level.
NOTE: Do not operate the machine when oil
level is below the “L” (low) mark or
above the “H” (high) mark on the
engine oil dipstick.
2. Check coolant level.
3. Check hydraulic reservoir oil level.
4. Check cooling air intake screen.
5. Drain fuel/water separator.
6. Check engine drive belt.
7. Check Filter Minder®.
8. Check for any oil or fuel leaks.
Cold Start Procedure
1. Move the Hydrostatic Drive Control Han-
dle to the NEUTRAL position.
2. Engage the parking brake.
3. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
4. Engage the starter.
(If the engine fails to start after 15
seconds, turn the key OFF, wait one
minute, and repeat the procedure. If
the engine fails to start after three
attempts, check the fuel supply sys-
tem).
NOTE: Absence of blue or white exhaust
smoke while cranking indicates that
no fuel is being delivered.
5. After the engine is started, immediately
reduce the throttle speed to 1/3.
6. Observe indicator lights and gauges
(after start-up).
NOTE: If any functions do not operate, shut
the engine OFF and determine
cause.
WARNING
DO NOT USE ETHER!
The engine is equipped with an
electronic starting aid. Use of ether may
cause an explosion and severe injury.
CAUTION
Start engine from the operator’s seat
only. When running engine inside a
building, ensure there is adequate
ventilation.
CAUTION
Electrical system is 12-volt negative
ground. When using booster with jumper
cables, precautions must be taken to
prevent personal injury or damage to
electrical parts.
1. Attach one end of jumper cable to posi-
tive booster terminal and other end to
positive terminal of vehicle battery con-
nected to starter motor.
2. Attach one end of second cable to neg-
ative booster terminal and other end to
vehicle frame away from battery.
3. To remove cables, reverse above
sequence exactly to avoid sparks. See
operator’s manual for additional infor-
mation.
NOTICE
Do not use starting fluid when starting
the engine. Use of too much starting fluid
will result in engine damage.
