Steering System
Analysis and Troubleshooting of Common Malfunction
The common malfunctions with the steering system include unstable turning, too big clearances,
one-sided turning or loosened turning wheels, as well as the deflective front axle which leads to
malfunction of the steering wheel operation.
In case the turning of the steering wheel is unstable, use a hydraulic jack to lift the front axle and check it
as guided by the front wheels. If the steering wheel operation is still unstable, disconnect the steering gear
& the linkage mechanism from the point of drop arm, and check these components.
The wear of the king pin normally wouldn’t cause difficulty in turning the steering wheel, except that the
weight of the vehicle is not in the specified range. In case of a malfunction, this should be kept in mind.
In case the turning of the steering wheel is difficult while driving, the reason lies with improper
adjustment of the front wheel angle.
The unstable turning of the steering wheel and its failure to return due to inappropriate clearance of the
steering gear or excessive pre-tightening torque cannot be determined until the steering gear is
disassembled for analysis; if these problems are gradually emerged, normally it is due to improper linkage
mechanism lubrication.
Failures in steering while driving are normally because of uneven road conditions. Under such
circumstance, it is imperative to make turning test by driving under various road conditions. The steering
wheel off-tracking is possibly caused by improper positioning angle of the front wheel, unbalanced tyres,
and excessive clearances of the steering mechanism or loosened steering mechanism.
As to the hydraulic system, besides the malfunctions of the hydraulic elements proper, it is also
imperative to focus on the condition of the hydraulic oil while making checks and analysis, for if the
temperature of the hydraulic oil is too high or low, it’s also easy to cause system malfunctions; if the
hydraulic oil is unclean or it contains excessive water & air, the hydraulic system won’t work properly
either.
