Section 7 - Repair Procedures
6 Manually pull the actuator arm through a full
cycle to be sure that the linkage moves freely.
Be sure that the linkage activates the throttle
shaft to approximately half throttle.
The linkage must be free of
friction and obstruction. Do not let
it rub against the engine, brackets
or hoses.
If the throttle linkage is improperly
adjusted and allowed to reach full
throttle, the engine will over-rev
and cause component damage.
FORD LSG 423 ENGINE
Automatic Choke Without
Poppet Valve
This choke functions in both gasoline and propane
mode.
Adjusting the choke to a rich mixture for cold
climates will hamper engine performance when
starting a cold engine on propane fuel. To avoid
this problem, start the engine in gasoline mode.
After the engine reaches normal operating
temperature, select propane mode.
A flow path past the choke butterfly is required if
the engine is to be cold started in the propane
mode. A ¼ inch (6mm) flow path is recommended.
Adjust the choke only when the engine and choke
are cold.
Automatic Choke With Poppet
Valve
This choke functions in both gasoline and propane
mode. The choke butterfly may be adjusted to a
fully closed (rich) position for colder climates and
the poppet valve will provide a flow path during
propane fueled operation.
7-2
Choke Adjustments
This engine is equipped with one of three different
choke configurations. Early models were equipped
with manual chokes. They were replaced with
electrically heated automatic chokes. These
chokes were improved with the addition of a
poppet valve to enhance cold starting ability on
propane fuel.
The machine is equipped with an automatic choke
if there is not a choke switch on the control panel.
Choke adjustments are affected
by climate. Richer adjustment will
be necessary in colder climates,
leaner adjustment in warmer
climates.
Manual Choke
The manual choke is solenoid operated and is only
operational in the gasoline mode. This choke will
not operate in propane mode.
Component damage hazard.
During adjustments, do not allow
the choke butterfly to stop the
solenoid from fully retracting. The
plunger must be able to bottom-
out inside the solenoid housing.
