Replacing and Adding System Components
Replacing the system board
The system board integrates the other elements of the system, such as the
processor, memory, storage, networking, and communications, and lets them
operate in a coordinated and useful way.
To replace the system board:

Turn off the system and disconnect the power cord, modem cord (if
installed), and all external peripheral devices.

Observe all safety and static electricity precautions. (See “Preventing static
electricity discharge” on page 22.)

Remove the bezel. (See “Removing the bezel” on page 25.)

Remove the left side cover panel. (See “Removing the side cover panel”
on page 26.)

Place the chassis gently on its right side.

Remove all expansion cards from the system. (See “Replacing an
expansion card” on page 63.)

Remove the back panel fan (see “Replacing the back panel and drive cage
fans” on page 73.)

Disconnect all cables from the system board, including the power cables
from the power supply, noting their locations and orientations (you will
reconnect these cables after you install the new system board).
Important All references to front, rear, left, or right on the server are
based on the server being in a normal, upright position,
as viewed from the front.
