Section 4 – Testing & Troubleshooting
Every Intraplex channel module is tested for proper operation at the factory before shipment. If you
believe that there is a problem with this module, check to see if any other channel modules in the
shelf are exhibiting problems. If so, the multiplexer common equipment or the transmission circuit
itself is experiences problems. The troubleshooting section of your multiplexer installation and
operation manual gives system analysis procedures.
If you have a problem that is affecting only this data channel, first check to make sure that the
DS-64NC modules at both ends of the circuit are set up identically. In particular, these settings must
be the same at both ends for the modules to operate correctly:
●
Starting time slot
●
Data rate
●
56 or 64 kbps per time slot
●
Sequential or alternating time slots
If the setup is correct on both modules, perform the steps in the next procedure to determine the
source of the problem.
4.1 Troubleshooting with the Internal Test Pattern Generator
Perform these steps to troubleshoot problems using the internal test pattern generator:
1.
At one end of the circuit, activate the local (payload) loopback on the DS-64NC module:
S3/position 1 UP, S3/position 2 DOWN.
2.
Set the test pattern generator to generate a pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) pattern:
S3/position 3 UP, S3/position 4 DOWN, S3/position 5 UP.
3.
The near end error indicator light (labeled NE ERR) flashes once each time an error is detected.
•
If the NE ERR light is flashing, this module has a problem and should be replaced with a
spare.
•
If the NE ERR light is not flashing, proceed to the next step.
4.
Leave the test pattern generator on and change the loopback switches to activate a remote
loopback: S3/position 1 DOWN, S3/position 2 DOWN.
5.
If the NE ERR light begins flashing now, replace this module with a spare and repeat the test.
•
If the NE ERR is not flashing, the module you just removed was the source of the problem.
•
If the spare is flashing also, the problem may be in the module at the far end.
6.
Deactivate the loopbacks and the test pattern generator (S3/positions 1 - 5 all UP).
7.
Repeat this procedure on the DS-64NC module at the far end of the circuit.
If this procedure does not reveal the source of the errors, there might be a problem with the external
wiring or connectors or with the input stage of the DS-64NC module itself. If you have a data test set
available, use the next procedure to further troubleshoot the problem.
4.2 Troubleshooting with an External Data Test Set
Perform these steps to troubleshoot problems using the internal test pattern generator:
1.
At one end of the circuit, connect a data test set (Fireberd 2000 or equivalent) to the module
adapter to test the DS-64NC module.
2.
Activate the local (payload) loopback on this DS-64NC module:
•
S3/position 1 UP
•
S3/position 2 DOWN
