2.8 SATELLITE STATUS PAGE
The Satellite Status Page (the sixth NAV page) provides
a visual reference of GPS receiver functions, including
current satellite coverage, GPS receiver status, and position
accuracy. The Satellite Status Page (Figure 2-47) is helpful
in troubleshooting weak (or missing) signal levels due to
poor satellite coverage or installation problems.
As the GPS receiver locks onto satellites, a
signal
strength bar appears for each satellite in view, with the
appropriate satellite number (01-32) underneath each
bar. The status of satellite reception is shown as follows:
• No
signal strength bars - The receiver is looking
for the satellites indicated.
• Hollow
signal strength bars - The receiver has
found the satellite(s) and is collecting data.
• Solid
signal strength bars - The receiver has
collected the necessary data and the satellite(s) is
ready for use.
• Checkered signal strength bars - Excluded
satellites.
The
sky view display (at top left corner of the page)
shows which satellites are currently in view, and where
they are. The outer circle of the sky view represents the
horizon (with north at top of the page); the inner circle
45° above the horizon; and the center point directly over
-
head.
Each satellite has a 30-second data transmission that
must be collected (hollow signal strength bar) before the
satellite may be used for navigation (solid
signal strength
bar). Once the GPS receiver has determined the present
position, the GPS 500 indicates position, track, and
ground speed on the other navigation pages. The GPS
receiver status field also displays the messages listed in
Table 2-4 under the appropriate conditions:
