Single-Needle Flow Control
During Single-Needle procedures, any changes to the pump flow rates in
either Manual or Automatic mode have an immediate effect on the
instantaneous pump flow rate. Increasing or decreasing the pump flow
rates during a Draw phase can affect the length of the phase. Some pump
flow rate changes during a Draw phase stop the Draw phase and
immediately start the Return phase.
During Single-Needle TPE procedures, you can make most changes in
Manual mode—such as stopping the replace pump or stopping both the
plasma pump and the replace pump—and the normal Single-Needle
cycle continues with that pump or pumps stopped.
If you select combinations of average pump flow rates the Spectra system
does not normally allow in Manual mode during a Single-Needle
procedure, the system enters a special Manual mode. For example, if you
reduce the inlet pump flow rate to zero, the Spectra system beeps three
times and enters the special mode. The following may occur:

During a Draw phase, the phase stops, the return valve opens, and
the AC and inlet pumps stop. While the Return Flow Controller
returns the contents of the Single-Needle bag to the donor/patient,
you can manually control the plasma and collect/replace pumps.
Therefore, when you enter an average pump flow rate for one of
these pumps, it immediately becomes the instantaneous pump flow
rate.

When the normal Single-Needle cycle begins again (for example,
when entering a different pump flow rate or returning to Automatic
mode), the system exits the special Manual mode, stops all pumps,
and allows the Return phase to proceed.
