Operating Mode
The Fortress Bridge can be operated in either of two modes:
Normal
(the default) or
FIPS
.
NOTE:
The Bridge
(in either operat-
ing mode) flashes the
front-panel cleartext
LED (
Clr
) whenever un-
encrypted data is pass-
ing in an encrypted
zone. In FIPS terminolo-
gy, the cleartext signal
indicates that the Bridge
is in
Bypass Mode (BPM)
.
FIPS
operating mode is necessary for deployments and
applications that are
required
to comply with the Federal
Information Processing Standards (FIPS) for cryptographic
modules. The high levels of security that can be implemented
in the Fortress Security System’s
Normal
operating mode meet
or exceed the needs of virtually all unregulated networked
environments.
FIPS operating mode is compliant with FIPS 140-2. It enforces
security measures beyond those of Normal operating mode,
the most significant of which include:
