Creating a text annotation
General
A text annotation is stored in an image file. Using this feature, you can annotate images
using a file with predefined text strings.
This feature is very efficient when saving information on an image when you are in-
specting a large number of similar objects. The idea behind using text annotations
is to avoid filling out forms or inspection protocols manually.
Definition of label
and value
The concept of
text annotation
is based on two important definitions –
label
and
value
.
The following examples explain what the difference between the two definitions is.

Differences
between a text
annotation and an
image description
Text annotations and image descriptions differ in several ways:
A
text annotation
is a proprietary annotation format from FLIR Systems and the
information cannot be retrieved by other vendors’ software. An
image description
uses a standard tag in the JPG file format and can be retrieved by other software.

■
The structure of a
text annotation
relies on
information pairs
(label and value), while
an
image description
does not. An image description file can have virtually any
information structure.
■
The concept of a text annotation relies heavily on
interaction by the user
. The user
selects one of several values for each label. The user can also enter numerical
values, and make the text annotation capture measurement values from the screen.
An image description is by its nature
static
, and cannot be changed interactively
by the user at the time when the image is saved. However, the image description
can be edited in a Pocket PC, using Pocket Word, before it is beamed to the
camera.
Valid file format
The valid file format for a text annotation is *.tcf. A *.tcf file is a text file with one of
the following two encodings:
