D. Bleeding of the brake system
If the brake efficiency is reduced or the brake pumps don´t return, it is probable that air
penetrated into the brake system. The air must be eliminated in order to ensure a correct
braking efficiency. Each of the brake circuits must be vented individually. It is important to
thoroughly bleed the brake system. Otherwise the system function may be very unreliable and
the brakes may fail. There are two main reasons why the air enters the brake system:
• Disconnected or loose hoses
• Insufficient quantity of brake fluid.
(1) Procedure
(a) Remove the upper engine cowling (Section 71-10).
(b) Verify whether the brake fluid expansion tank on the firewall contains a sufficient
volume of brake fluid:

S5 00-51 01 standard brake system - the brake fluid level must be between
both marks.
2 S5 00-61 01 Matco brake system - the brake fluid level must be
approximately 6 mm from the top of the brake fluid expansion tank.
(c) Release the parking brake.
(d) Put the hose from transparent plastic on the air bleeding screw (Fig. 12-3). Loosen
the air bleeding screw and catch the flowing brake fluid into a suitable receptacle.
(e) Depress the brake pump pedal several times, gradually on the left side as well as
on the right side of control.
Watch the outflowing brake fluid and at the moment when it doesn´t contain the air
bubbles, tighten the air bleeding screw. Apply the same procedure for the other
circuit of brakes.
(f) Check the function of the brake system and the brake fluid volume in the
expansion tank.
(g) Repeat the procedure several times until the pedal offers resistance against motion
(feels firm).
(h) Install the upper engine cowling (Section 71-10).
NOTE
If the brake efficiency remains unsatisfactory after bleeding or if
the pedal motion is excessive, refill the brake system with brake
fluid and bleed it again. Continue until all the air is out of the
system.
