      HSM6-DP Speaker/Microphone Instructions

The HSM6-DP is a vandal resistant high performance speaker microphone for indoor/outdoor use. It features a
high performance microphone pre-amplifier and a 2.5W 70V / 8 ohm 10 Watt speaker input.

Speaker/microphone Placement

Do not mount the HSM6-DP microphone near light fixtures or electrical equipment. The HSM6-DP should be
placed as close as possible to the subject(s) to be monitored for best performance of the microphone. The HSM6-
DP microphone is useable at distances of up to 25 feet but is dependent on the level of background noise in the
area. Experimentation in the environment will determine what distances work best.

Cable Runs

Run  2 each 22 gauge, stranded, two conductor shielded cable between the HSM6-DP speaker microphone and
the monitoring device. If you’ll be using a call switch, run an additional 2 conductor shielded cable. To avoid
crosstalk issues, do not use a multiconductor shielded cable in place of the 3 cable runs. Keep the cable run
distances at or under 500 feet and away from AC power sources, light fixtures and electrical equipment. See
figure 1 for connecting the HSM6-DP to an STW2 base station.

Note- If you are picking up radio stations or 60hz hum in the microphone, try Earth or electrical grounding the
“com“ terminal of the microphone pre-amplifier board.

Adjusting the Microphone Lo-Cut and Hi-cut filters

The HSM6-DP’s high and low frequency response can be trimmed to reduce background noise. If you are
primarily interested in capturing conversations and want to reduce air conditioning and other noises, rotate both
controls (hi-cut and lo-cut) to just short of full clockwise. Experimentation with the settings may be required to
achieve the best results for a given environment.

Adjusting the Microphone Automatic Gain Control

The HSM6-DP features automatic control of gain. This is useful for environments where it is anticipated that
sound levels will range from quiet to loud. The factory default setting is for light AGC response should suffice for
most applications. The best way to set this control is to adjust it to a comfortable volume level (on an ETS base
station or PC monitor speakers) when the loudest sounds are present and constant. Turning the c CW will
increase the amount of gain reduction during loud sound intervals. If the sound is reduced too much during loud
sounds, turn the control - CCW a small amount and continue experimenting until a comfortable medium is found.

Adjusting the Microphone Volume

The HSM6-DP output level is set by selecting the desired volume range and adjusting the gain control.
The “Volume Range” switch should be set to the “HI” position when using the HSM6-DP with ETS camera
interfaces or base stations. If the sound at the “head end” is too loud and / or distorted, rotate the control - CCW.
If the volume at the “head end” is too low, rotate the cCW. Contact ETS technical support if you need to
connect the HSM6-DP to equipment that is not made by ETS. The HSM6-DP is shipped with the Volume set at
midrange.

Speaker voltage input mode

If you’re NOT connecting the HSM6-DP to an ETS base station or DVR/camera interface, and want to use the 8
Ohm 10 Watt mode of the speaker, simply remove the speaker transformer board and connect directly to the red
and black wires.
