Now issue the following command to the Meridian II console to initiate the upload:
upgradekernel
Next, update the default file system partition by issuing this command to your Meridian II console:
updatekernelflag 1
You should see this line displayed:
Default Kernel now set to: UPGRADE
Finally, reboot the system by issuing this command at the shell prompt:
reboot
Wait about 90 seconds for the system to shutdown and reboot. Then log in to the Meridian II using
telnet
or
ssh
. If all has gone well, you should be able to log in the usual way. You can check the
running kernel version at any time by issuing
kernelversion
which will cause the kernel version message to be displayed.
You can also check to see which kernel image the system is currently booted under by issuing this
command at the shell prompt:
syskernel
Which should cause this to be printed to the console:
BOOTED KERNEL IMAGE = 1 (Upgrade)
If so, and your unit seems to be operating normally, you have successfully completed the kernel
upgrade. If your unit does not boot up successfully, and you are not able to
telnet
or
ssh
into the
system after 90 seconds, then there has been some kind of problem with the kernel upgrade. It is
possible that the file downloaded was corrupt or that you forgot to set your
ftp
download file mode
to binary when downloading the file--either from the EndRun Technologies website or when transfer-
ring it to the Meridian II.
Recovering from a Failed Kernel Upgrade
To restore your Meridian II to a bootable state using the factory kernel, you must use the serial I/O
port and reboot the Meridian II by cycling the power. Refer to
Chapter 2 – Basic Installation, Con-
nect the Serial I/O Port and Test the Serial I/O Port
for setup details. When you have connected
your terminal to the serial I/O port, apply power to the Meridian II.
Pay close attention to the terminal window while the unit is rebooting. After the Linux bootloader
displays the message
