Appendix C
Points and the TLP System
C.1
About this appendix
This appendix provides background information on the TLP system, and also provides documentation
for the three user-defined points that are built into the Model 3711 system.
C.2
Points
The term “point” is used to refer to a specific grouping of information that supports communication,
data acquisition, data manipulation, and control. Points fall into two basic categories:
•
Physical points – the point represents a specific hardware element or group of hardware
elements. For example, each analog output is a physical point, each analog input is a physical
point, each comm port is a physical point, the LCD panel is a phyiscal point, and so on.
•
Data points – the point represents a structure for data organization. For example, an FST
register, the alarm log, the history database, and so on, are data points.
Points are used during configuration and during development of FSTs and Modbus programs.
C.3
TLP system
Points are identified using TLP notation:
•
T = Type
•
L = Logical number
•
P = Parameter
Each point has a unique combination of these three elements.
TLP notation can be text or numeric. For example, if numeric notation is configured,
AOU B3, EU
will be represented as
4 18, 6
. See Section 3.5 for information on configuring TLP notation. Both of
these strings represent the value, in engineering units, of the analog output associated with point B3 in
the Model 3711’s physical memory.
The TLP system is used during configuration. When the TLP symbol (an ellipsis, or
...
) is displayed
on a button, the button provides access to the Select TLP dialog box, shown in Figure C-1.
