Note:
Although the Q control does adjust the bandwidth of a filter, the Q value itself is dimensionless; it has
no unit of measurement. Some equalizers use the fractional bandwith of the filter, measured in octaves, to
express this parameter. The two parameters are inversely related; a high Q value corresponds to a small frac-
tional bandwidth. The following table lists some equivalent Q and fractional bandwidth values.

The tunable Butterworth HP and LP filters can also be switched in or out independently of the EQ. The HPF
has a range of 20-400 Hz. The LPF has a range of 400 Hz–20 kHz. Each filter’s slope can be switched to 6, 12,
18, and 24 dB/octave using touch and spin.
The equalizer controls are described in tabular form in Section 9.5.
12.2.6.1 Smaart and RTA View
When the
Smaart IN
button is pressed, the Smaart data is shown behind the
EQ curve, displaying the RTA or Spectrograph of that channel’s signal. The
analyzer section can operate in both RTA mode (amplitude vs frequency) or
spectrograph mode (frequency vs time) by using the
RTA View/Spectrograph
toggle switch above the EQ
graph.
Many audio signals that are encountered in the field are highly dynamic: musical signals, speech, and even
environmental noise contain significant changes in spectral content as a function of time. While the clas-
sical RTA spectrum display is useful for viewing the time-averaged spectral content of a signal, a display
technique is required to enable the analysis of the incoming spectrum over time. SmaartLive’s Spectrograph
mode fulfills this requirement, providing a three-dimensional view of the incoming signal:
energy
versus
frequency
versus
time
. The spectrograph can be thought of as a record of multiple RTA spectrums taken over
time, with color representing amplitude. Using this functionality, the spectral content of the input signal is
recorded as it changes in time, allowing viewing and analyzing time-varying trends in the input signal.
Note that the Smaart EQ display is derived from the current active trace. See Section 12.6 for details.
12.2.6.2 Equalizer Edit Menu
The equalizer’s
Edit
menu has the following items:
•
Save EQ Preset As
— Saves the current EQ settings with a user-supplied name
•
Load EQ Preset
— Loads a previously saved preset
•
Reset EQ
— Resets the entire equalizer to its default state
•
Copy
— Copies the entire channel settings to the clipboard
•
Paste
— Pastes the clipboard EQ settings to the equalizer
