Sonix Hmi-Tu Technical Manual

SONIX HMI-TU TECHNICAL MANUAL

TM377 / A  June 2022  www.eaton.com

8   Appendix A – Hmi-Br - Safety

Interface Board

A.1.  Introduction

The Hmi-Br is a safety interface intended to be installed

in the non-hazardous area to provide an intrinsically safe,

Zener clamped, resistively limited output to the Eaton

MEDC Hmi-5 access panel which is installed within the

hazardous area.

A.2.  Installation

The Hmi-Br safety interface comprises a single PCB

mounted to a DIN rail non-metallic holder. The PCB is

fully encapsulated within the holder to form a tamper

proof unit. Two user terminals are provided at either end

of the unit to allow for connection of intrinsically safe

(marked Hazardous) and non-intrinsically safe (marked

Non-Hazardous) wiring. In addition to these terminals

the unit is also provided with a threaded metallic earth

stud to allow for the connection of the I.S. safety

earthing.

The Hmi-Br safety interface board should be mounted

in the non-hazardous area, within an enclosure which

provides suitable ingress protection and a minimum

protection of IP20.

The product must not be installed in an environment

where it may be attacked by aggressive substances.

Cable termination should be performed by suitably

trained personnel in accordance with IEC EN 60079-14.

The non-intrinsically safe terminals are rated for a Um of

250V

The HMI-BR is a four-channel device that provides the

following entity parameters per connection point. All

connection points are with respect to the local I.S. Earth.

A.3.  Maintenance

This equipment should require little or no maintenance

during its working life. However, if abnormal or unusual

environmental conditions occur due to mechanical

damage or accidents then visual inspection is

recommended

The Hmi-Br contains no user replaceable parts and shall

not be repaired by the user. Contact Eaton MEDC Ltd for

replacement if required.

Special Conditions For Safe Use

•

The apparatus is only permitted to be used with

products manufactured by Eaton MEDC Ltd, or its

derivative companies. In addition to this, the suitability

of apparatus to interact with any external equipment

shall be evaluated and stated explicitly on the

equipment certification.

•

The apparatus must be installed within an enclosure

providing a suitable degree of protection as to prevent

ingress of conductive materials with a minimum rating

of IP20.

•

The ambient local to the apparatus in its final

installation shall not exceed the specified ambient

temperature range -40ºC ≤ Ta ≤ +60ºC.

•

Isolation between the intrinsically safe interface

and the external enclosure is to be verified upon

installation by the application of a dielectric strength

test. The test shall be conducted as follows:

•

A 500 V dielectric strength test is to be

conducted upon assembly between all

intrinsically safe circuits and the external

enclosure. Test duration is to be a minimum of

1 minute with an applied voltage of 500 V AC

rms at a frequency of 48 – 60 Hz or alternatively

a voltage of 700 V DC may be applied. Leakage

current is not to exceed 5 mA.
