First Time Engine Operation
Engine First Time Start Preparations
When preparing to start a new or newly overhauled engine, perform all of the
operations listed below. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious
engine damage. This procedure includes the use of special tools to prime the fuel
system. Authorized Detroit™ service outlets are properly equipped for this type of
service. Never use the starting motor and fuel pump to prime the fuel system.
Prolonged use of the starting motor and fuel pump to prime the fuel system can
result in damage to the starter, fuel pump, and injectors.
Be sure to be familiar with all of the instruments, gauges and controls which are
needed to operate the engine.
Note the location and function of the following:
• Oil pressure gauge
• Low oil pressure indicator
• Coolant temperature gauge
