Laser operation modes
Continuous wave mode (CW)
CW implies a continuous, uninterrupted laser beam as long as the laser
is activated (and determined by a time set). This mode presents a
stable output power control since the maximum power equals the
average power.
In the adjacent example the laser is in CW mode with a power of 3 W.
Chopped mode
In literature sometimes referred to as "pulse mode".
The laser beam is interrupted at regular intervals (e.g. 50% ON and
50% OFF) which can be adjusted via the duty cycle. The average power
is the product of power and duty cycle.
The result is better thermal control due to the fact that the OFF periods
are used for thermal relaxation of the tissue.
In adjacent example the laser is in chopped mode with a power of 3 W
and a duty cycle of 20%. The average power is 0.6 W.
