Removing a heat sink
Prerequisites
CAUTION:
Never remove the heat sink from a processor unless you intend to remove the processor. The heat sink is necessary
to maintain proper thermal conditions.
WARNING:
The heat sink is hot to touch. Allow the heat sink to cool for some time after powering down the appliance.

Follow the safety guidelines listed in the Safety instructions section.

Follow the procedure listed in the Before working inside your appliance section.

If installed, remove the full-length PCIe card(s).
4
Remove the cooling shroud.
5
Keep the Phillips #2 screwdriver ready.
Steps
1
Loosen one of the screws that secure the heat sink to the system board.
Allow some time (approximately 30 seconds) for the heat sink to loosen from the processor.

Remove the screw diagonally opposite to the screw that you first removed.
3
Repeat step 1 and 2 for removing the remaining two screws.
4
Remove the heat sink.
Next steps

Replace the heat sink(s) and processor(s).

Replace the processor and heat sink.

Removing a processor
Prerequisites
NOTE:
This is a Field Replaceable Unit (FRU). Removal and installation procedures should be performed only by Dell certified
service technicians.
NOTE:
To ensure proper appliance cooling, you must install a processor blank in any empty processor socket.

Keep the Phillips #2 screwdriver ready.
4
Remove the cooling shroud.
5
Remove the heat sink.
WARNING:
The processor is hot to touch for some time after the appliance has been powered down. Allow the processor to cool
before removing it.
CAUTION:
The processor is held in its socket under strong pressure. Be aware that the release lever can spring up suddenly if
not firmly grasped.
Steps

Release the
open first
socket lever near the unlock icon
by pushing the lever down and out from under the tab.

Release the
close first
socket release lever near the lock icon
by pushing the lever down and out from under the tab. Lift the lever
90 degrees upward.
