4.4.2 Point-to-point
The point-to-point topology is the native mode for the SL240 PCIe card. One user option
available in this mode is whether flow control is used or not. If flow control is used, the
transmitter on each end will not transmit when the remote receiver is telling it to back off or the
receive fiber is missing. In this mode, the maximum amount of data that can be transferred is 247
MB/s per direction (in this case, both cards are receiving and transmitting 247 MB/s at the same
time). The maximum distance between the nodes is 26 km.
There are many applications for the point-to-point topology—as long as it involves only two
nodes, this topology covers it. One advantage that point-to-point has over the other topologies is
the ability to do simultaneous bi-directional traffic.

4.4.3 Chained
This topology is a single transmitter on the end of a long string of receivers. No flow control is
available in this topology, and the distance between the nodes is limited only by the transceivers
used (10 km typical, 26 km maximum).
This topology is good for broadcasting data to multiple destinations where late data is of no use,
such as video transmission applications.
