Installation
Ꮨ
If in doubt about how to install the device correctly, please contact an
EXPERT or a specialist workshop and let them do the installation!
Incorrect installation can cause damage to the plug-in card and also to your
computer and all connected devices.
Caution, lethal hazard!
Switch off the computer in which the plug-in card is to be installed, and all
connected devices, and disconnect all devices from the mains voltage,
remove the plug from the mains! Just turning off at the on/off switch is not
enough!
• Open your computer’s housing and carefully remove the cover.
• Locate a free PCI slot, remove this slot’s cover and insert the PCI card into the slot. Screw in
the plug-in card firmly, and check it sits correctly in the PCI slot!
• Replace the computer housing.
• Connect the WLAN antenna included in the delivery to the corresponding jack on the slot of
the WLAN plug-in card.
Position the WLAN antenna as high up as possible, ideally the top of the antenna should point
perpendicularly upwards.
Beware of the fact that metal objects negatively influence the coverage, the computer hous-
ing, for example, must not stand between your WLAN antenna and the WLAN router.
• Connect your computer and monitor to the mains voltage and switch on all devices.
• If your computer does not start correctly, switch it off immediately and check all the settings
and cable connections.
It must be disconnected from the mains power supply before restarting, see
above!
Driver Installation
Windows detects the plug-in card automatically.
Stop the automatic search for the driver and insert the CD provided into an appropriate drive on
your computer. If the setup program does not start automatically, run the program „Setup.exe“
from the main directory of the CD. Follow all of the instructions.
It might be necessary to restart in order for the network connection to function properly.

Tips & Notes
• The antenna can be located where you choose, via the connection cable, underneath the
antenna is a magnetic base.
This enables, depending on the position of the antenna, a better transmission/reception capac-
ity than conventional antennas that are attached directly to the jack of the WLAN plug-in card.
• If there is a network or system administrator who is responsible for your network (for example
in a larger company) let him set up the connection and the configuration, do not install the
device yourself.
• The stated maximum data transfer rate of 54 MBit (802.11b/g), which means about 6.5
MByte/s, is never achieved in reality. This is due to different transfer mode systems, transmis-
sion errors, the distance between WLAN stations, etc.
The transfer rate also slows down depending on the distance between PCI plug-in card and,
for instance, your router.
• With Windows, it might take some time until the PCs appear on the network.
Normally, you cannot access another PC immediately after you have switched on the PCs and
Windows has loaded on all the PCs. If, after a few minutes, it is still not possible to access oth-
er PCs, check any firewall and/or virus scanner settings that may be used.
The access permissions also have to be set accordingly, if you are using an operating system
that offers these features.
There are numerous causes for why a network connection does not succeed. Please refer to
the appropriate specialised literature or to a specialised technician.
• If you are not using a DHCP-Server (e.g. integrated in all WLAN DSL-routers), you should
assign an IP-address to each PC (and if necessary to the router!).
For example, set the first computer to 192.168.1.1, the second to 192.168.1.2, etc. The first
three numbers must be the same for all the computers, the last number can range from 1
to 254.
Do not assign the same IP address twice!
The „subnet mask“ has to be set to 255.255.255.0 for all the computers in the network.
• You should always encrypt your network connections, to prevent unauthorized access, i.e. to
your WLAN DSL router. You should use „WPA2“ instead of „WPA“ or „WEP“ for encryption, if
it is available, because „WPA“ and „WEP“ are no longer sufficient protection against unautho-
rized access.
• The wireless coverage depends on the ambient conditions, and can be restricted by:
- High-frequency interference of all types (computers, monitors, mobile phones)
- Any kind of housing and vegetation
- Conductive metals that are close to or inside the device, e.g. computer housings, cables,
radiators, metallised insulated glass panes, reinforced concrete ceilings.
- Influences on the aerial’s transmission characteristics, due to the distance of the transmitter
or receiver from conductive areas or objects (including the human body or floor).
- Broadband interference in urban areas that reduces the signal-to-noise ratio; the signal is
not recognised because of the „noise“
- Irradiation from insufficiently shielded electronic devices, e.g. computers operated openly, or
similar.
- Too short a distance to transmitter & receiver
