Working with chains saws for tree maintenance with rope and car-
ry strap
The user of a chain saw for tree maintenance who works at a height using rope and a carry
strap should never work alone. There should always be a ground-based person with the appro-
priate emergency training available to assist.
The user should generally be trained in safe climbing and working position techniques and
should be supplied with carry strap, ropes, nooses, carabiners and other equipment required
to maintain safe and correct working positions both for themselves and for the saw.
Preparing the saw for use
The chain saw should be tested, filled, started and warmed
up by the person on the ground and then switched off before
being lifted up to the user in the tree.
The chain saw must be fitted with an appropriate noose that
will allow it to be affixed to the carry strap of the user:
A. the noose is to be secured to the hanging mechanism on
the rear of the saw;
B. appropriate carabiners are to be made available in order
to indirectly (by means of the noose) and directly (by
means of the hanging mechanism of the chain saw) affix
the saw to the carry strap of the user.
C. make sure that the chain saw is safely attached when it is
lifted up to the user;
D. ensure that the chain saw is attached to the carry strap
before it is released from the lifting rope.
DANGER!
Risk of injury!
Branches that are high up or under tension can wedge the saw chain in the wood!
