DC
(Direct Current) - Power which a computer requires for opera-
tion.
DIP switch
- A series of tiny switches built into circuit boards which
enable you to configure a circuit board for a particular type of com-
puter or application.
DOS
(Disk Operating System) - Developed by Microsoft, it was the
standard operating system for IBM-compatible personal computers.
DRAM
- The most common type of computer RAM, called D-RAM
or DRAM.
driver
- A program that controls a device. Every device, whether it
is a printer, disk drive, or keyboard, must have a driver program.
DVD
- Originally called Digital Video Disc since it was used mostly
for video, now called Digital Versatile Disc, similar to a CD only
with greater storage capacity.

- BIOS which can be updated.
flash memory
- A memory chip that keeps its information even
when the computer is powered off. Used in BIOS which can be up-
dated, like the system in your computer.
