Location of smoke alarms

Fit smoke alarms on each floor level in your home. Good places to

fit alarms are where you can hear them throughout your home. For
example: -Top of the staircase - Stair landings - Between living and
sleeping areas etc.
For additional protection, fit a smoke alarm in each room – except in

the kitchen/cooking area, bathrooms or garage – where smoke or
steam can set them of accidentally.
Always make sure that the sound of the smoke alarms can be heard

in the bedrooms.
Additional smoke alarms could give earlier warning, and increase the

chance of safe escape and rescue from a fire.

(sensitivity reduction)

Placing the smoke alarm close to a kitchen, fireplace or other heat sources
can sometimes cause accidental triggering. In these cases the smoke
alarm can be temporarily turned off by pressing the test button. Thereafter,
the alarm will then automatically revert back to normal sensitivity. The red
LED will flash every 12 seconds to indicate that it is in pause mode and will
automatically revert back to normal operation after 10 minutes.
The low-battery warning is often activated at night and can be temporar-
ily paused for ten hours by pressing the test button. This allows you to
replace smoke alarm the next day or a more appropriate time.

Do not fit smoke alarms in the following locations:

Near the angle between the ceiling and walls where the air stands still and

•

form a “dead air space” that prevents smoke from reaching the smoke alarm.

In kitchens, garages, or bathrooms or other high humidity areas,

where combustion particles or moisture can cause nuisance alarms.

Near fresh air vents, fans or extractors. Draughts can blow smoke

away from the alarm.
In areas where excessive dust or dirt could contaminate the sensing

chamber, making it over sensitive or impairing smoke entry.
In areas where the ambient temperature is not controlled, and may drift

•

below 5

˚

C or above 40

˚

C. High humidity could cause nuisance alarms.

Within 1.5 m (60”) of a fluorescent or halogen light fitting, or LED-lamps,

•

which emits electrical ‘noise’ that can prevent correct smoke alarm operation.
In insect infested areas. Insects can clog

smoke openings and or cause nuisance
alarms.
Do not paint the smoke alarm.

Installation

1. Remove the smoke alarm from its mounting

plate. The smoke alarm comes with its mounting plate

loosely attached so that it is deactivated.

2. If the smoke alarm should accidently sit tight and be

activated while still in its packaging, push in its lock tabs

and twist the alarm anticlockwise to loosen and deactivate it.

3. Select an appropriate location for alarm installation

(see section above).

4. Screw the mounting plate onto the ceiling using the

included screws and wall plugs.

5. Align the arrow on the back of the smoke alarm to the

arrow on the mounting plate and set the alarm into place.

6. Once the alarm is in place, twist it clockwise to secure it into its

correct position. A click will be heard when it is securely locked into

place.

7. The integrated batteries will then automatically power on and the

smoke alarm will be activated.

Low battery warning & unit replacement

about one-half minute intervals. It is then time to replace the smoke alarm. The
alarm works as normal during this time. Waste electrical products should not
be disposed of with household waste. Please recycle where facilities exist.
