32.2 Monitoring CPU Frequency in Linux
This sections contains the information on how to monitor CPU frequencies in the linux through
i7z
and
turbostat
utility.
32.2.1 i7z
The
i7z
is a small open source utility that reports CPU frequency information. The information displayed covers Turbo Boost, frequencies, multipliers, temperature, and times spent
in the C0/C1/C3/C6/C7 states.

RHEL 7.x;

Note
:
This needs to be unzipped in the Linux.
For
Ubuntu 18.04, 20.04 or later
; enter the command
apt install i7z
to install and then go to step 3.
Caution
:
For Ubuntu 18.04 make sure the security fix for
apt upgrade
has installed and
systemd
is updated.
Step 1:
In the Terminal, go to the directory where i7z was downloaded.
Step 2
: Run the following command to make the file executable:
RHEL 7.x: chmod +x i7z_64bit
RHEL 8.x:
chmod +x i7z
Step 3:
Run
i7z
to monitor the CPU frequency:
For
RHEL 7
: Enter the following command If logged in as root: ./
i7z_64bit
or If logged in as a standard user:
sudo ./i7z_64bit
z
./i7z_64bit
For
RHEL 8, Ubuntu 18.04
and
Ubuntu 20.04
: enter the following command If logged in as root: ./
i7z
or If logged in as a standard user:
sudo ./i7z
z
