3.5.6 Equation Editor
3.5.6.1 Overview
In order to facilitate illustration, the following two terms should be defined at first.
Reference trace
: a trace used as data in the equation.
Equation trace
: a current active trace after equation operation.
The user is allowed to enter an algebraic expression in the equation editor. The algebraic expression can be used for
mathematical operation of measurement data. Operation results can be displayed in the data trace form.
Measurement data of the equation trace are the data of one or more channel(s). The mathematical expression
entered by the user is composed of the basic operator, built-in function and parameters. Measurement parameters or
trace data used in the equation are provided by the vector network analyzer. If a calculation equation is entered into
the equation input box and the activation box is ticked, the current active trace will become an equation trace. The
equation trace data are the data after operation, and the equation trace curve can be updated with data changes in a
real-time manner. Take the input equation S21/(1-S11) as an example. The value of each point on the equation
trace is calculated by S21/(1-S11) of the corresponding point. If the trace includes 201 points, the operation will be
done 201 times by the expression, that is, once for each point.
Measurement of a three-port device is not conventional for the analyzer, but can be done through the equation
editor. If the user expects to obtain a logarithmic equation trace, the following expression can be used: S21+S23-
S13. However, the data used in the equation editor are plural data with no format requirements. The user needs to
enter the following equation: S21*S23/S13 as shown in Fig. 3.67. After the equation is entered, Eq=S12*S23/S13
will be displayed on the current active trace of the vector network analyzer, as shown in Fig. 3.68.
