Handling Jams and Misfeeds Safely
During normal operation, pieces of flatwork
will occasionally feed incorrectly into the unit.
Follow the directions below to safely remove
these items.
Handling a Jam Safely
If a piece of flatwork becomes jammed, the
unit will shut down and a fault message will
appear on the CHI Panel display.
WARNING
Never
reach into the machine
while it is running.
Serious injury could result.
Stop feeding items into the unit.
Release air pressure by pressing and reset-
ting a red safety STOP button.
Turn power OFF at the main disconnect
switch.
If necessary, duck under the front guard to
gain access to the spreading area.
Remove the jammed material by hand.
NOTE:
F r e q u e n t j a m m i n g
may indicate that the unit needs
adjustment or repair. Operators
should inform appropriate
personnel if there is a consistent
problem.

Handling Misfeeds Safely
If set to do so, the CHI control system will
automatically reject items which are not fed
correctly (the inlet and corner sensor signals
allow the processor to determine when an
item needs to be rejected). If an item is not fed
correctly, or becomes loose during transportation
or spreading, CHI is designed to drop the piece
before attempting to feed it.
This prevents poor laydown of an item and
may prevent jams as well. This can speed up the
processing line by not having to take the time to
clear jams and shutdowns.
No more than two misfed pieces should be
allowed to accumulate; otherwise, they will begin
to interfere with machine operation.
After one or two pieces have been dropped,
follow the procedure under
Jams
to safely stop
the machine. Collect the piece(s), then start the
unit again. Continue with the feeding process,
including those pieces just collected.
The automatic reject feature can be disabled,
the result of which is that items which are
incorrectly fed are rejected only when the clamps
cannot handle them or when they cause a jam. The
pieces that are not fed properly may not have a
good laydown.
The skill and the accuracy of the operator
and the proper adjustment of the feeder are
determining factors in choosing whether or not
to enable/disable the auto reject mode of the
spreader/feeder.
For more information on how to enable
or disable the automatic misfeed reject
function, refer to the
REPAIR
chapter,
Inlet Section
section,
Enabling/Disabling
Automatic Misfeed Reject
procedure.
