REAR AXLE 4-6
not spin bearings while drying.
4. After bearings have been inspected as later described,
lubricate thoroughly with regular axle lubricant; then
w rap each bearing in clean cloth until ready to use.
CLEANING PARTS
Im m erse all parts in suitable cleaning fluid and clean
thoroughly. Use a stiff bristle brush as required to assure
removal of any accum ulation of old lubricant or foreign
deposits. Remove particles cf gaskets which m ay adhere
to m ating surfaces of housirg, carrier, covers, cages, re
tainers or flanges. C lean all lubricant passages or channels
in pinion cage, carrier, caps, and retainers. M ake certain
that interior of housing is thoroughly cleaned. Clean vent
plugs and breathers.
Small parts such as cap screws, bolts, studs, nuts, etc.,
should be cleaned thoroughly.
IN SPECTIO N
W henever available, the M agna Flux M ethod should be
used on all steel parts, except ball and roller bearings.
This m ethod is especially suited for inspection of ground
or highly finished surfaces for wear and cracks which oth
erwise would not be visible to the naked eye.
BEARINGS
R otate each bearing slowly, and at the sam e tim e ex
am ine bearing for roughness, dam age, defects, or wear.
N ote condition of bearing cups and cages and replace
bearing if dam aged, or if any of the conditions previously
noted are evident.
GEARS
Exam ine drive gear and drive pinion, differential pin
ions and differential side gears carefully, for dam aged
teeth, worn spots in surface hardening and distortion.
Check radial clearances between differential side gears
and differential case. Check fit of differential pinions on
spider. Refer to “ Specifications" at end of this publica
tion for new limits, fits and tolerances.
DIFFERENTIAL CASE
Inspect differential case assem bly for cracks, distortion
or dam age, if case is in good condition, thoroughly clean
case and cover; then assemble case with cap screws and
m ount in lathe centers or “ V ” block stand. If lathe is not
available, install differential side bearings and m ount case
in differential carrier. Install dial indicator (J-8001) and
check differential case run-out.
Differential case with drive gear installed is checked in
the sam e m anner, except that dial indicator (J-8001) read
ing m ust be taken at gear (fig. II) instead of at case
flange.
Figure 11 — C h e c k in g Drive G e a r R u n -O u t (T ypical)
W henever run-out exceed limits, run-out m ay be cor
rected as described under “ R epair” later in this publica
tion.
AXLE SHAFTS
Exam ine splined end of axle shaft for twisted or
cracked splines, twisted shaft, and worn dowel holes in
flange. Install new shafts if necessary.
Install axle shaft assembly in lathe centers and check
shaft run-out with dial indicator, if run-out exceeds limits,
discard axle shaft. Position dial indicator so that indicator
shaft end contacts inner surface of flange near outer edge
of flange and check flange run-out. Refer to “ Specifica
tions" at end of this publication for limits.
GASKETS
The use of old gaskets is not recom m ended as they are
usually com pressed beyond further usefulness.
SHIMS
Carefully inspect shim s for uniform thickness. Remove
any accum ulated foreign m atter that might affect shim
pack thickness. W here various thickness of shim s are used
in a pack, it is recom m ended that the thickest shims be
used between the thin shims.
THRUST WASHERS
Thrust washers should always be replaced, even though
only the slightest of wear is indicated. Refer to “ Specifi
cations” for thickness of new parts.
SPIDER
Carefully inspect spider arm s for wear, or other evi
dence of failure. Refer to “ Specifications” at end of this
Section.
