2. Pry out lip oil seal with screwdriver or small
chisel.

1. Coat outer casing o f new lip oil seal with a n o n ­
h a rd e n in g sealer and drive it into place with Installer
J-21426.
2. Install propeller sh aft and adjust fluid level.

1. Disconnect speedom eter cable.
2. Remove retainer bolt, retainer, speedom eter
driven gear and O-ring seal.

Installation o f speedom eter driven gear is the
reverse o f R EM OVAL. Install new O-ring seal (if
required) and adjust the fluid level.

R e m o v a l
1. Raise vehicle and support transm ission with
suitable transmission jack.
2. Rem ove propeller shaft.
3. Disconnect speedom eter cable.
4. Disconnect transmission rear m ount from fram e
crossm em ber.
5. Remove two bolts at each end o f fra m e cross
m e m b e r and remove crossmember.
6. Rem ove extension housing.
7. Install Special Tools J - 2 1427-01 and J-8105 on
output sh aft and remove speedom eter drive gear.
R em ove retain in g clip.

1. Place speedom eter drive gear retaining clip into
hole in output shaft.
2. Align slot in speedom eter drive gear with
re ta in in g clip and install.
3. Install extension housing and tighten attaching
bolts to 25 p o u n d feet.
4. C onnect speedom eter cable.
5. Install crossm em ber to fra m e and transmission.
6. Install propeller shaft.
7. Rem ove transmission jack and lower vehicle.

R e m o va l
1. R e fe rin g to d ra in in g procedures, d ra in tra n s­
mission fluid fro m oil pan.
2. A fter oil pan and strainer have been removed,
remove valve body assembly. Discard gaskets.
3. Rem ove m an u al shaft-to-case retain er and
u n th re a d j a m nut holding rnage selector in n e r lever to
m a n u a l shaft.
4. Remove j a m nut and remove m anual shaft from
range selector inner lever and case.
NOTE: Do not remove m anual shaft lip oil seal
unless replacem ent is required.
5. Remove p ark in g pawl actuating rod and range
selector in ner lever from case.
6. Remove bolts and park in g lock bracket.
7. Remove p ark in g pawl disengaging spring and,
i f necessary to replace park pawl or shaft, clean up bore
in case and remove park in g pawl shaft retain in g plug,
park pawl shaft and pawl.

Installation o f p a rk in g linkage, selector lever and
m anual shaft is the reverse of REM OVAL. Install new
plug (if required), new lip oil seal (if required) and new
gaskets. Adjust the fluid level.
NOTE: Before installing the propeller shaft,
liberally lubricate splines o f the transmission yoke
with a Lithium soap base lubricant. The lubricant
should seep fro m the vent hole (rear cap o f yoke)
when installing yoke on transmission output shaft.
It is essential that the vent hole is not obstructed.

1. Raise vehicle and disconnect speedom eter cable
at transmission.
2. Remove governor cover retain er and governor
cover.
NOTE: Be careful not to d a m a g e cover and " O "
ring seal.
3. Remove governor. Inspect weights and valve for
freeness.

1. Install governor.
2. Install governor cover using a brass drift around
the outside flange o f the cover.
NOTE: Do not distort cover on installation. Be
sure " O " ring seal is not cut or dam aged.
3. Install retainer.
4. Connect speedom eter cable, lower vehicle and
check transm ission fluid level.

VALVE ASSEMBLY
Removal
1. Disconnect vacuum hose from vacuum m odula­
tor stem and remove vacuum m odulator attaching screw
and retainer.
2. Remove m odulator assembly and its O-ring seal
from case.
