7. R em ove shift fin g er shaft (15) and selection cam
and stud assem bly (6) from end co v e r (19).
8. Rem ove attaching p arts holding r e v e r s e shift fin ger
(23) to control housing (3), then rem ove r e v e r s e
shift fin ger.
Cleaning and Inspection
Use same procedu re as d escrib ed p reviou sly fo r C lark
R em ote Control A ssem b ly.
Assembly
NOTE:
K ey numbers in text r e fe r to Figu re 6D.
1. Install re v e r s e shift fin g er (23) in control housing
(3). Tighten attaching nut firm ly .
2. Install assem bly (6) into end co ver (19).
3. Install snap rin g (7) and thrust w asher (8) on shift
fin ger shaft (15), then in sert shift fin g er shaft into
end co ver.
4. Install shift fin ger key (5) on selection le v e r shaft
(

).
5. Slide selection le v e r shaft (20) onto shift fin ger shaft
(15). Rotate selection le v e r shaft until selection cam
and stud assem bly (6) p ro p erly engages selection
le v e r shaft. Then rotate selection le v e r shaft 180
d eg rees so that the shift fin ger key (5) is pointing
upward as shown.
6. P osition new gasket (9) on housing (3).
7. P o sitio n shift fin g e r (4) in control housing (3), then
w hile in sertin g the end co ver (19) with shafts into
control housing, in stall shift fin ger (4) on selection
le v e r shaft (20).
NOTE:
Make sure the shift fin ger (4) is in
stalled on the shaft with the longer boss facing
the end co ver as shown.
8. Install end c o v e r (19) to control housing (3) using
attaching bolts.
9. Install shift fin g e r screw (21) and new lock w ire to
shift fin g e r (4).
10. P o sitio n selection le v e r (11) on assem bly (6), so that
selection le v e r is p a ra lle l to the shift fin ger shaft
(15). Tighten attaching nut firm ly .
11. P osition shift le v e r (16) on shift fin g er shaft (15),

so that angle
“ A ”
(see fig. 7D) is 14° 30. Tighten
clamp nut firm ly .
TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT
The procedure requ ired to rem o ve the transm ission
fro m trucks covered in this manual a re dependent gen
e r a lly upon the type o f cabs (i.e ., conventional or tilt),
type o f body, and liftin g equipment availa b le in the rep a ir
shop. O perations other than those included in this section
may be n ecessary i f the veh icle has sp ecial equipment
such as a pow er ta k e -o ff unit and controls, etc.
The requ ired operations w ill be obvious upon visual
inspection o f the veh icle. The instructions contained
h erein under '•'Rem oval” and “ Installation’ ’’ w ill serve
as a guide in accom plishing tran sm ission replacem ent.
It is im portant to note that v eh icles covered by this
section w ill have eith er an "A p r o n ” o r “ S.A .E . # 2 "
type flyw h eel housing as shown in F igu re 8D. The
" A p r o n " type flyw h eel housing is e a sily identified by the
sheet m etal pan which co v e rs the en tire lo w e r portion o f
the clutch housing. A ls o , note the lack o f a separate
clutch housing.
The “ S.A .E . #2’ ' type flyw heel housing com pletely
surrounds the flyw h eel. A separate clutch housing is
used in addition to the flyw heel housing. T ran sm ission
replacem ent p rocedu res a re d ifferen t fo r each type f ly
wheel housing used.
Removal
1. On transm issions equipped with rem ote controls,
disconnect
control

fro m
shift
le v e r s at
transm ission.
2. On tran sm ission s having a conventional gearsh ift
le v e r , rem ove flo o r mat, rem ove tran sm ission flo o r
pan c o ver, and then place gearsh ift le v e r in “ N E U
T R A L ’ ’ position. Rem ove gea rsh ift le v e r and control
tow er assem bly f r o m tran sm ission , e x c e p t on
m odels
equipped
w i t h New P ro c e s s o r RT510
transm ission.
NOTE:
On conventional cab m odels with New
P r o c e s s transm ission, rem ove g ea rsh ift le v e r
using T o o l (J-8109) as shown in F igu re 3C.
P r e s s down firm ly on tool and rotate counter
clockw ise to re le a s e g ea rsh ift le v e r.
