ENGINE-ELECTRICAL 6Y-37
2. I f the voltage drop does not exceed 3.5 vo lts and the
solen oid does not pull in, m easure the voltage a v a il
able at the SW ITCH term in al o f the solenoid.
3. If the solenoid does not fe e l w arm , it should pull in
whenever the voltage a va ilab le at the SW ITCH t e r
minal is 7.7 vo lts o r m o re. When the solenoid fe e ls
w arm , it w ill requ ire a somewhat higher voltage to
pull in.
STARTING M O TO R A N D SOLENOID CHECK
The follow in g checks may be made i f the sp ecific
g ra v ity o f the battery is 1.215 o r higher.
1. If the solenoid does not pull in, m easure the voltage
between the switch (S) term in a l o f the solenoid and
ground with the starting sw itch closed.
CAUTIO N:
If the solenoid fe e ls w arm , allow to
cool b efo re checking.
If the voltage is le s s than 7.7 v o lts, check fo r e x
c e s s iv e resistan ce in the solenoid control circu it. If
the volta ge exceeds 7.7 volts, rem ove the starting
m otor and check (1) solenoid current draw, (2) s ta rt
ing m otor pinion clearan ce, and (3) freed o m o f shift
le v e r linkage.
2. If the solenoid " c h a t t e r s '’ but does not hold in, check
the solenoid fo r an open " h o ld - in " winding. When
ev e r it is n ecessa ry to rep lace a starting m o
to r solenoid, alw ays check starting m otor pinion
clearan ce.
3. If m otor engages but does not crank o r cranks slo w
ly , check fo r e x c e s s iv e resistan ce in the external
startin g circu it, trouble within the starting m otor, or
e x c e s s iv e engine resistan ce to cranking.
SERVICE OPERATIONS
STARTER M O TO R
Rem oval and Installation (Fig. 4s)
The follow in g procedu re is a gen eral guide fo r a ll
v e h ic le s and w ill v a ry sligh tly depending on the truck
s e r ie s and m odel.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable at the battery.
2. D isconnect engine w irin g harness and battery leads
at solenoid term in als.
3. R em ove s ta rte r mounting b olts and retaining nuts
and disengage sta rte r assem bly fro m the flyw h eel
housing.
4. P o sitio n sta rte r m otor assem bly to the flyw heel
housing and in stall the mounting b olts and retaining
nuts.
T orqu e the mounting bolts 25 - 35 ft. lbs.
5. Connect a ll w irin g leads at the solenoid term in als.
6. Connect the battery ground cable and check operation
o f the unit.
