GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The tandem re a r axle installation (fig . 87) consists o f
a rea rw a rd re a r axle (Eaton M odels 30R and 34R) and a
forw ard re a r axle (Eaton M odels 30D and 34D) which
c a r r ie s a single speed p ow er d ivid er with an in te r-a x le
d ifferen tia l. An a ir o r vacuum operated shift mechanism
is used to lock out the in te r-a x le d iffe re n tia l to provide
p ositive d rive to both axles when required.
D rive is transm itted fro m the transm ission through a
conventional p r o p e lle r shaft to the pow er d iv id e r input
shaft (fig . 88). The input shaft supports the in te r-a x le
d iffe re n tia l which tran sm its equal d rivin g fo r c e to two
h e lica l gea rs, one mated to a gea r on the fo rw a rd re a r
axle pinion shaft to d riv e the forw a rd axle and the other
mated to a gear on the p ow er d iv id e r output shaft to
transm it d rive fo r c e through an in te r-a x le p ro p e lle r
shaft to the rea rw a rd axle.
Both a xles d riv e at all
tim es, so the in te r-a x le d iffe re n tia l (3rd d iffe re n tia l) is
provided to allow d iffe re n tia l action between the two
axles. When extra traction is requ ired to m ove the v e
h icle, the in te r-a x le d iffe re n tia l can be locked out so
equal p ow er can be d e liv e re d to each axle. A toggle
switch in the d r iv e r 's com partm ent actuates the solen oid-
con trolled, vacuum operated, lock-out shift le v e r at the
axle.
The a ir system is co n trolled by a le v e r operated
v a lve in the d r iv e r s com partm ent. A ir p ressu re actuates
a shift cylin d er which is mounted on the axle. Both s y s-
