On a new veh icle o r a fte r the w heel has been changed,
the w heel nut torque must be checked at 100, 500, and
1.000 m ile s and e v e ry 1,000 m ile s th erea fter.
Torqu e w heel nuts 200-250 lbs. ft. on 30 S e rie s trucks
with 11,000 lb. re a r axles, R P O H-22.
4 0 - 6 0 Series Trucks
CA UTIO N:
When rem ovin g wheel rim , loosen
all nuts approxim ately flush with end o f stud,
then tap clam p to loosen rim . Do not rem ove
nuts until clam ps a re fr e e o r clam p may fly o ff
o f stud. When in stalling rim , tighten attaching
nuts altern a tely and evenly to avoid e x c e s s iv e
wheel run-out.

WHEEL BEARINGS
NOTE:
Use high m elting point wheel bearin g
lubricant which m eets G eneral M otors S p e c ifi
cation #GM 6031M.
Front
Due to the weight o f the tir e and wheel assem bly it is
recom m ended that they be rem oved fro m hub b efore
lubricating b earin gs to preven t damage to o il seal. Then
re m o v e the fron t wheel hub to lu bricate the b earin gs.
The bearin gs should be thoroughly cleaned b e fo re r e
packing with lubricant.
Front w heels a re equipped with tapered r o lle r bearin gs
on a ll trucks. W heel b earin gs should be lubricated e v e ry
30,000 m ile s .
Do not m ix wheel b earin g lubricants.

Rear
The r e a r wheel b earin gs on a ll except the tra ilin g re a r
axle on MA50 s e r ie s r e c e iv e th eir lubrication from the
r e a r axle. When installin g bearin gs which have been
cleaned, repack with lubricant. On MA50 S e rie s tra ilin g
axle, check lubricant le v e l o f each wheel hub e v e ry 6,000
m ile s . When n ecessa ry, rem o ve plug and r e fill hub to
o il le v e l m ark with "M u lti-P u r p o s e ” G ear Lubricant
m eeting U.S. A rm y O rd. Spec. M IL -L -2 1 0 5 B as shown
in the " G e a r Lubricant” V is c o s ity chart.
TIRES
Tire Rotation
T o equ alize w ea r it is recom m ended that the tir e s be
rotated e v e ry 6,000 m ile s . Upon rotation, tire p ressu re
must be adjusted (fron t and r e a r ) in accordance with the
recom m endations in the tire inflation p ressu re table.
(See Section 10.)
Six wheel trucks with unmatched tir e s may be rotated
by cro ssin g front tir e s and by exchanging inner and outer
tir e positions on the dual wheels.
Tire Radii and Tire Life
The outer tire on a dual wheel w ill skid o r drag on a
turn because o f the d ifferen ce in the turing ra d ii o f the
inner and outer tir e s . T h is resu lts in fa ster w ear o f the
outer tir e . In gen eral, the tir e with the la rg e s t d iam eter
o r lea st w ear should be at the outside o f each dual wheel.
In addition, certain tru ck ers have found when trucks are
operated continuously on high crown roads an in crea se in
a ir p ressu re o f from 5 to 10 pounds in the outside tir e of
each dual produces maximum tire life .
Installing Tires on M ultipiece Rims

perien ced , qu alified personnel. A lw a ys inflate
tir e s in a safety cage whenever p ossib le o r use
a " c lip - o n ” chuck and stand aside.
STEERING
STANDARD STEERING
1 0 -3 0 Series
Check the steerin g gea r to fram e bolts reg u la rly to be
certain they a re tight. Keep the pitman arm to pitman
shaft nut tight. Keep the housing side and end c o v e rs
tight to p reven t lubricant lo ss and p reven t steerin g from
loosening. Seasonal change o f this lubricant is unneces
sa ry and the housing should not be drained-
The steerin g g e a r is fa c to r y -fille d with steerin g gea r
lubricant. Seasonal change o f this lubricant should not be
p erfo rm ed and the housing should not be drained - no
lubrication is req u ired fo r the life o f the steerin g g e a r.
E very 36,000 m ile s , the gea r should be inspected fo r
seal leakage (actual solid grea se - not just o ily film ). If
a seal is rep laced o r the gea r is overhauled, the gea r
housing should be r e fille d with #1051052 (13 oz. container)
Steerin g G ear Lubricant which m eets GM S pecification
G ” 4673M, o r its equivalent.
NOTE:
Do not use E P C hassis Lube, which
m eets GM S pecification GM 6031M, to lu bricate
the gea r. DO NO T O V E R - F IL L the gea r housing.
NOTE:
Do lu bricate interm ediate steerin g shaft
with w ater resistan t E P chassis gre a s e which
m eets G en eral M otors S pecification #GM 6031M
e v e ry 6,000 m iles.
POWER STEERING
P o w e r steerin g a ssist is provided by a hydraulic pump
d riven by the engine. When the engine is not running o r
i f the pow er s teerin g pump d riv e b elt breaks, the veh icle
can s till be steered , but much g r e a te r steerin g e ffo r t
w ill be requ ired.
S e rv ic e g e a r box in the same manner as p re s c rib e d
fo r the conventional o r standard steerin g g e a rs . In
addition, fo r a ll m odels, check fluid in pow er steerin g
pump r e s e r v o ir —w hile hot and wheels in full le ft turn
