again when it is able effectively to compress the data being transmitted.
The MNP 5 standard is also supported for compatibility with older
modems.
The
%C
command controls the use of V.42bis and MNP5. With
compression enabled (
%C1
), the modem will try to use V.42bis or MNP5
depending on the setting of the
–E
command and the capability of the
remote modem.
In order to make effective use of data compression, the asynchronous
communications package must run at a higher speed than the rate at
which data is transferred between the modems. A speed of 19,200 bps is
recommended.
The performance of V.42bis can be optimised for particular types of data
transmission by the S-registers S93 and S94.
