This chapter discusses describes the following features:
❒
Using Virtual LANs
❒
Using Spanning Tree Setup and Monitoring
❒
Using Hunt Groups to Aggregate Bandwidth Between Switches
! & %
In switched networks, VLANs help you to segment traffic and usage patterns in a
manner similar to creating physical network subnets and segments in a traditional
shared LAN environment. Use VLANs to:
❒
Segment your network into manageable Broadcast Domains, which increases
available bandwidth for each station.
❒
Create logical workgroups for users who share the same system resources (file
servers, printers, etc.).
VLANs also have the advantage of not being limited by physical switch domains. Users in
various physical locations can participate in the same VLAN.
You can use the OpenTrunk technology to interpret differing VLAN formats, and even to
translate VLAN tags from one vendor’s format to another’s. For example, if you have a
network that uses both 3Com LinkSwitch and multilevel VLAN tags, you can configure
the switch to convert between the two formats.
Finally, in a P220G switch network, you can use VLANs to limit spanning tree domains,
so that the network converges more quickly during spanning tree reconfiguration.
