Orienteering Compasses

1) Place the 66SPECTRA onyour right or left hand (

figure 1

).

2) Fold the map so the magneitc meridian lines are parallel with the edge of the

printed map.

*   The starting position and destination should be visible.

3) Using your SPECTRA hand, hold the map with your thumb parallel to the desired

direction of travel (

figure 1

).

*  Use your thumb as a baseplate.

4) Orient the map by rotating your body until the magnetic needle is parallel with the

magnetic meridian lines.

5) Read the color and symbol the NORTH end of the needle points, e.g. “

blue

 --

two dot

”.

*  Remeber the color and symbol as you run to your destination.

Tips!

a. Make a habit of checking your direction and position on the map.

b. Draw a fine arrow, using a pen, permanent marker, or finger nail varnish on top of

your thumb.  This allows you to point the arrow in the intended direction of travel,

and makes position location more accurate.

3) Using your 6JET hand, hold the map with the black, direction of travel arrow

pointing in the desired direction of travel (

figure 2

).

4) Orient the map by rotating your body until the magnetic needle is parallel with the

magnetic meridian lines.

5) Run to your destination.

Tips!

a. Make a habit of checking your direction and position on the map.

b. As you check your location on the map, move your compass forward during your

run.  This will help you estimate the distance and amount of time until you reach

your destination.
