6.4.4 Checking the ATR crystal position for centrality
1. Swing the ATR objective in the beam path.
2. Tape a piece of adhesive strip on the gold mirror. Put the gold mirror on the micro-
scope stage and position the mirror below the crystal of the ATR objective.
3. Set the ATR crystal in the measurement mode position (i.e. lower position), if not yet
done. (See section 4.12.4.)
4. Move the microscope stage carefully upwards until the ATR objective crystal is
pressed in the focus position by the mirror. In doing so, the crystal tip leaves an
imprint on the adhesive strip.
Note: The focus position is indicated acoustically by a beep and optically by the In-focus
LED. When the ATR crystal has reached the focus position, the In-focus LED turns from
red to green for a short moment. Then it goes off.
5. Move the microscope downwards a little bit. Do not change the position of the
mirror on the stage!
6. Set the ATR crystal in the viewing mode position (i.e. upper position). (See
section 4.12.4.)
7. Focus on the mirror.
If the imprint of the crystal tip is in the center of the crosshairs as shown in fig. 6.6a, the
ART crystal is in the center position. In this case, no realignment in horizontal direction is
required. Otherwise, you have to align the ATR crystal centrically.
NOTE

The ATR crystal is fragile. For this reason, move the microscope stage always
carefully upwards. Prevent the ATR crystal tip from hitting against the stage.
