3.6 Trailer Deck Shims
In order to maintain consistent loading on all axles, shims may be required in the deck frame. The
correct shimming of a loaded trailer should result in a level frame and fifth wheel plate. Negative
camber is to be avoided. Fig. 3-25 shows the locations where shims can be placed.
A chart should be kept for all loads requiring shims and must be developed through trial and error.
Axle weights should be checked on a certified scale, although an estimate can be obtained by reading
the suspension pressure and referring to the load chart.
To adjust the shims:
1.
Place blocks under the trailer main rails, near
the end.
2.
Loosen the Retaining Bolt on both sides.
3.
Dump the air pressure in the trailer axle
suspension. A gap between the deck frame
and the Rear Axle Section will develop.
4.
Insert the required shims and retighten the
retaining bolt. Always shim both sides of the trailer equally.
5.
Pressurize the suspension air bags.
6.
Check the load on the axles.
7.
Repeat steps 1 through 6 if necessary.
Note: Shims should be reduced or removed when the trailer is unloaded, to avoid possible
suspension issues.
