•
Relative to the tractor trailer operations, there are other checks, inspections and procedures
not listed here which are necessary, prudent and/or required by law. The following is in

3.4.3.1
Coupling the Fifth Wheel
1.
Visually inspect the equipment before coupling.
•
Make sure the fifth wheel is properly
lubricated, the locks are open and the ramps
are tilted down in the proper position.
•
Make sure the mounting of the fifth wheel to
the tractor or trailer is in good condition and
tight.
2.
Back up close to the trailer, centering the kingpin
in the cradle of the fifth wheel, STOP.
3.
Check to see that the trailer is at the proper
height for coupling. The leading edge of the
trailer plate should initially contact the fifth
wheel top bearing surface behind its pivot axis
as the tractor or trailer backs under the trailer.
If adjustment is required, do the following:
•
Ensure the gooseneck lock pin is in place and
locked.
•
Dump the suspension air from the trailer and
tractor or jeep.
•
Start the engine on the gooseneck’s hydraulic
power unit or connect and engage the tractor’s
hydraulic system. Make sure the selector valve is positioned correctly.
•
Using the hydraulic controls, extend the main deck cylinders to rotate the gooseneck to a
position that will allow the Shim Legs to be rotated up. See Fig. 3-9.
•
Using the hydraulic controls, rotate the shim legs UP.
•
Using the hydraulic controls, adjust the length of the main deck cylinders to position the
gooseneck at a height that will allow it to be coupled to the tractor or jeep’s fifth wheel.
