If the battery is discharged, the engine 
can be started with the use of two 
jumper cables and the battery of an-
other vehicle. You can also use the 
same method to help start another ve-
hicle. Use only jumper cables with fully 
insulated grips on the terminal clamps.

Do not touch high-voltage wiring 
and cables on a running engine. 

There is a risk of fatal injury if you do 
this. Carefully comply with the following 
instructions to avoid personal injury or 
damage to one or both vehicles.

1. The battery of the other vehicle must 

be rated at 12 volts. This information 
is provided on the battery label

2. Switch off the engine of the vehicle 

providing starting assistance and any 
consumers in both vehicles – with the 
exception of the hazard warning sys-
tem of the vehicle providing starting 
assistance

3. Make absolutely certain that there is 

no contact between the bodywork of 
the two vehicles – short circuit haz-
ard

 

4. Your BMW is equipped with the so-

called positive terminal connection in 
the engine compartment as a battery 
positive terminal. The cover of the 
positive terminal connection (for 
jump starting) is marked with

fold open the flap, refer to the arrow. 
First connect a jumper cable to the 
positive terminal of the discharged 
battery, then to the positive terminal 
of the charging battery

5. Use the second jumper cable to con-

nect the negative battery terminals in 
both vehicles. To do this, first con-
nect one end of the other jumper ca-
ble to either the support vehicle's 
negative battery terminal or a suit-
able ground on its engine or body-
work. Then connect the other end to 
the negative battery terminal or a 
suitable ground on the vehicle being 
started. There is a special nut pro-
vided for this on the BMW (see illus-
tration)

Follow the same sequence for 
connecting the jumper cables, 

otherwise, you run the risk of injury 
caused by spark generation at the bat-
tery.
