Introduction
This supplement to the Operating Instructions SB-500
is limited to the special features of these compressors
concerning their use in potentially explosive areas
(compressors in a special explosion-proof design). In
addition to this, the Operating Instructions SB-500 are
applicable.
If these compressors are used, the use of an oil separ-
ator OA-EX in the system is required. For this reason,
the BITZER Operating Instructions DB-300 and DB-309
must also be adhered to.
According to the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC
and the EU Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU,
these refrigeration compressors are designed for in-
stallation in machines located in areas that are subject
to the EU Explosion Protection Directive 2014/34/EU
(ATEX 114).
They may only be put into operation if they have been
installed according to the standard Operating Instruc-
tions SB-500, this supplement and the Operating In-
structions for oil separators DB-300 and DB-309 and if
the overall system complies with the applicable legal
provisions (applied standards: see declaration of incor-
poration).
The compressors have been designed especially for
the use in zones 1 and 2 (ATEX) according the EU Dir-
ective 1999/92/EC (ATEX 137) and comply with the re-
quirements of the ATEX marking Ex II 2G Ex h IIC T4
Gb X. They have been built in accordance with state-of-
the-art methods and current regulations. Particular im-
portance was placed on user safety.
The Ex-relevant information (zones, explosion groups,
temperature class, etc.) must be defined by the end
user and specified in an explosion protection docu-
ment.
Before putting the system into operation, the end user
must have the completed installation assessed and ac-
cepted by a notified body.
These Operating Instructions, the EU Declaration of
Conformity (type examination certificates) and the man-
ufacturer’s documentation of the components used
must be kept available in the vicinity of the refrigeration
system during the whole service life of the compressor.

2.1
Authorized staff
Any work on compressors and refrigeration systems
may only be performed by qualified and authorised staff
who have been instructed especially in the area of ex-
plosion protection. The local regulations and guidelines
will apply with respect to the qualification and expertise
of the specialists.
