Bar-code Specifications

Bar-code Sample Identification

Bar-code symbols are a highly accurate and efficient procedure for identifying and processing 
laboratory samples. Beckman Coulter instruments use four bar-code symbologies (types) to identify 
specimens:

 •

Code 128

 •

Code 39

 •

Codabar

 •

Interleaved 2-of-5.

The bar-code reader senses the difference between enabled bar-code symbologies in a run.

A misread label can cause one sample ID to be read as another sample ID. The laboratory’s process 
for printing, placing, and meeting all bar-code specifications is important to achieve highly 
accurate reading. Follow the bar-code specifications to avoid inaccurate reading of the bar-code 
label.
