Positive-Opening Safety Interlocking Switches
Safety interlock switches used with the MM-TA-12B Muting Module must satisfy
several requirements. Each switch must provide electrically isolated contacts: at
minimum, two normally closed (NC) contacts from two individually mounted
switches.
The contacts must be of “positive-opening” design, with one or more normally
closed contacts rated for safety. Positive-opening operation causes the switch to
be forced open, without the use of springs, when the switch actuator is disen-
gaged or moved from its home position (see the Banner Safety Catalog for exam-
ples). In addition, the switches must be mounted in a “positive mode,” to
move/disengage the actuator from its home position and open the normally
closed contact, when the guard opens.

Reliable Application
When monitoring multiple guards with a series connection of multiple safety
interlock switches, a single failure may be masked or not detected at all.
When such a configuration is used, procedures must be performed regularly to
verify proper operation of each switch.
See “Monitoring Series-Connected Safety
Switches” (page 28) for more information.
Failure to do so could result in seri-
ous injury or death.
