Edge Dual ODU Protection Operation and Rules
For information on IDU protection switching criteria and service restoration times,
refer to
Edge Dual ODU Protection on page 15
Operation and Rules
1. The IDUspe and both ODUs must be loaded with the same release of operating
(embedded) software.
2. Both ODUs at each end of the link must have the same diplexer/channel option
(same product part number).
3. ODU1 is designated as the primary ODU and is default online for Tx.
4. The Primary ODU is biased to become the online transmitter on power up.
5. When a Tx switch does occur, the link will stay with the online Tx until forced to
change by a subsequent alarm condition or a Portal command.
6. Tx protection switching is not hitless. Traffic is recovered within 200ms.
7. Rx path protection switching (receiver voting) is hitless (errorless) on the two
receive path data streams. Both ODUs are online receiving and the IDUspe selects
which of the two data streams to pass on to its DAC modules. Where both data
streams are of equal merit (non-errored or equally errored), the IDUspe stays with
the previously selected data stream.
8. Protection applies to the full payload of Ethernet and/or NxE1 traffic.
9. When installed with a single antenna, a coupler is required. If an unequal loss
coupler is used, bear in mind that one ODU has both its Tx and Rx connected to the
low-loss side, and the other ODU the high-loss side. Normally the primary ODU
(ODU1) would be assigned to the low-loss side, because the primary ODU is the
default online Tx ODU.
10. When a failed ODU is repaired or replaced it immediately becomes available
(after
start-up)
for protection service.
11. A protection guard timer mechanism prevents protection switching oscillation.
Switching Guard Times on page 16
12. To check the partner configurations go to the Diagnostics > System/Controls
screen. The Link Module confirms the protection settings and which of the IDUs is
online for Tx and for Rx. The default configuration has the primary IDU online for
Tx and Rx.
13. During antenna alignment apply a Tx lock at each end of the link.
14. Exercise protection switching using the Tx Mute control in the Diagnostics >
System/Controls screen. The same screen also supports online/offline locks, and a
line-facing digital loopback.
