Peterson Adaptive Control System
Automatic control of the feed conveyor and compres-
sion roll is known as the Peterson Adaptive Control
System. This automatic control starts when the operator
starts the feed system at the control panel (Figure 7 on
page 15).
Some of the feed system set points can be adjusted.
See “Adjust Menu” on page 141.
Feed Speed
The feed speed (ft/min) is set by the operator on the con-
trol panel and displayed on the Machine Status page
(page 95) and on the Feed System Information page
(page 125).
At the maximum high idle (No Load) engine speed, the
feed runs at the Feed Speed setpoint. As the engine
slows down under load, the feed speed decreases. If the
engine rpm reaches the Stop point, the feed system
stops.
If the engine speed continues to be pulled down to the
Reverse point, the feed system reverses (maximum
reverse speed is 100% of the forward speed setting).
When the engine recovers, the feed returns to the for-
ward direction.
Compression Roll Speed
The compression roll speed corresponds to the feed
speed at a set ratio. The default ratio is 1.2 times the feed
speed.
When the compression roll is between the Max Auto
Lift point and the Min Down point, it floats up and
down on the feed material.
If the compression roll is forced above the Max Auto
Lift height of 45 in. (143 cm), the hydraulic system
applies down pressure until the compression roll goes to
32 in. (80 cm).
If the compression roll is forced above the Max Push
height, the feed conveyor and the compression roll
reverse. The maximum reverse speed is 100% of the
forward speed setting.
If Auto Down Pressure is selected on the control panel,
the hydraulic system applies a 1-second downward
pressure pulse to the compression roll every 6 seconds
while the compression roll is floating (riding on top of
the feed material).
Feed System Options
Three different preprogrammed modes can be selected
that meet specific demands for processing particular
feed material.
See “Feed System Options” on page 127.
Other Automatic Actions
•
If the discharge conveyor motor or feed system
hydraulic pressure exceeds the “Over Pressure” set-
point the feed system reverses at full speed for the
“Feed Reverse Time” setpoint.
When the reverse time elapses, and none of the feed
components are over pressure, the feed system
resumes in the forward direction.
•
If the impact release system is struck hard enough
from a non-grindable object, the IRS limit switch
trips, the feed system reverses for 3 seconds, the
clutch disengages as the engine slows to idle.
The feed system cannot be restarted until the limit
switch is reset or the IRS is disabled.
•
If one or both of the pivot shaft limit switches trip,
the feed system reverses for the duration of the
“Feed Reverse Time” and then stops. The clutch
disengages and the engine stops.
The feed system cannot be restarted until the limit
switches are reset.
•
If the clutch is disengaged, the feed system reverses
and then stops.
